Burnout Symptoms are a Wake-Up Call You Need to Listen to
“Burnout” gets tossed around a lot these days. It’s on every wellness blog, in hashtag banks, and mentioned in countless articles. But I’m here to tell you: burnout is not just a trend. It’s a very real, very personal experience that’s affecting more and more of us, especially women in leadership roles.
I know this not just because I coach on it, but because I’ve lived it. And through my journey (and the stories shared on The Glow Up Revolution podcast), I’ve discovered that burnout is so much more than feeling tired or overwhelmed. It has layers, and we can’t heal unless we start to peel them back.
It’s Not Just Work; It’s Everything
For too long, we’ve been sold the idea that burnout is purely a result of a bad job or a demanding boss. But that’s only part of the story. Burnout often stems from life itself, family pressures, caregiving roles, perfectionism, and the silent expectation to always hold it all together.
We are more than our work. And yet, when we start burning out, we often reduce ourselves to just that: what we produce, what we achieve, who we show up for. I had to learn how to look beyond the productivity lens to truly begin recovering.
The Layers of Burnout Are Real
Over time, I began to recognize the different ways burnout showed up in my own life, and in the lives of my clients. Emotional burnout made me feel numb and irritable. Mental burnout? Total brain fog. I’d forget simple things or struggle to focus, even on things I cared about.
Then there was the physical piece: tight shoulders, digestive issues, constant fatigue; and the energetic side: feeling disconnected from my own purpose, like I was going through the motions. And the hardest part? Social burnout. I started withdrawing from friends and family, not because I didn’t love them, but because I had nothing left to give.
What Helped Me Heal
Healing didn’t come from a single “aha” moment. It came from small, consistent shifts. I started setting real boundaries (yes, even with people I love). I explored different types of rest, not just sleep, but creative, emotional, and spiritual rest. I asked for help, even when it felt uncomfortable. And I began reconnecting with the things that made me feel most like me: the practices, people, and passions that reignited my spark.
If I could share just one takeaway with you, it’s this: asking for help does not make you weak. In fact, it’s one of the strongest, most powerful things you can do.
You Deserve to Feel Like Yourself Again
Burnout doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means your body and soul are asking for a different way forward. And I believe with my whole heart that recovery is possible; when we give ourselves the space, support, and care we truly need.
